Richard Dunn

Artist’s bio

Richard was born and raised in Winchester, Virginia. He served in the Marine Corps for eighteen years. He has a Masters Degree in Architectural Engineering, as well as a Masters in Structural Engineering both from Virginia State University. In addition he holds a Masters degree in Civil Engineering from West Virginia State University. As the Senior Structural Engineer he oversaw the drilling of foundations for over 35 of the high rise buildings in Myrtle Beach.

In 2017 Rick was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. It is believed to be a result of the tainted water at Camp Lejeune. His doctor suggested that he do something with his hands to help with his dexterity and coordination.

This set him on his current path of making Jewelry.

As a self-taught artist, he has acquired a vast knowledge of gemstones and it has led to a true passion for making fine jewelry. He works with multiple metals, copper, silver, gold, and brass using only real gemstones in his creations.

Artist Statement

I am a true self taught artist. I have always had a great interest and appreciation for the creative process.

After I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2017, I started working in creating jewelry. What began as a means for an expressive outlet that allowed me to work with my hands to improve my coordination and dexterity quickly became a passion.

I work with multiple metals, copper, silver, gold, and brass using only real Gemstones in my creations. My favorite style is steam punk.

Recently, I have branched out to stained glass and painting.  I enjoy recycling old materials and using them in a new way, incorporating unusual materials in my stained-glass pieces. I also rediscovered my love working on the lathe and have begun creating bowls from fine woods I have been collecting for many years.
