Karen DeMatteo

Artist’s bio

Karen DeMatteo's creative journey has taken her from California to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and ultimately to the coastal beauty of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she now lives and creates alongside her husband.

A lifelong artist and maker, Karen has always been drawn to transforming natural and everyday materials into meaningful works of art. Throughout the years, she has explored a variety of creative pursuits, finding joy in both the artistic process and the opportunity to share her handmade creations with others.

After relocating to the South Carolina coast, Karen discovered a new source of inspiration in the shells scattered along the beaches and shorelines of the Grand Strand. Captivated by their intricate patterns, textures, and natural beauty, she began incorporating these treasures of the sea into her artwork.

Today, Karen is best known for her coastal-inspired creations, particularly her handcrafted shell jewelry and decorative pieces. Each work reflects her appreciation for nature, the ocean, and the unique character found in every shell she collects. Through her art, she seeks to preserve the beauty of the coast and create pieces that evoke memories of the sea.

Karen's work celebrates the connection between nature and creativity, transforming simple gifts from the shoreline into distinctive pieces of wearable and decorative art.

Artist’s statement

Whether nature or nurture, I know my creativity came from my Mother! She could create anything and always shared this with me growing up.  When I make something beautiful I

Think, wow Mom would love this. Thank you Mom!
